This Takes the Cake
...I cleaned the bathtub and turned it on to fill it, to bathe Little Son.
It filled up with tepid brown water.
I thought perhaps the pipes were rusty after not being used a while -- I let it run, and....the water turned ice cold. And brown. With bursts of black.
Same with the hot water tap in the kitchen, and the downstairs bathroom.
I looked at the water heater, and realized it is similar to the one we had in the house I grew up in, which was built in 1970. How are six people going to take showers in this house? We`re going to have to go back to Japanese-style family bathing -- if we ever get clear hot water back, that is.
The kids and I are now showering at the old house, where the movers left my computer. So I can still blog about my life, until tomorrow, when the phone line will be cut off here. I am trying not to cry too much, because I think it`s scaring the kids.
No email answer from the landlord about the leak.
If we still don`t have hot water tomorrow, he won`t get an email -- he will get a phone call. It will be hard to be nice, but I will do my best.

What the fuck! Stop posting already.. I just came back to use the blogroll.
Fuck. I CAN'T keep up
That sucks. If we lived closer, I'd offer you our bathroom. Hope it gets fixed quickly.
Judy (lurker who reads your blog almost daily)
Has email worked in the past? My LL is really lame about checking mail in a timely fashion, I always have to go to the phone. No water is definitely a "fix it NOW" emergency, even if he lives three hours away. It doesn't matter if you just got there.
Hang in there, L. I hate, hate, hate dealing with landlords - even our nice, if clueless, one - but this is a definite stick-to-your-guns situation.
Hang in there, and think about calling the city. This qualifies as an emergency, and I'll bet there are legal rules about landlords and proper upkeep of the place. Call right away, don't wait for email.
That's HORRIBLE. I can't believe you haven't called yet. Hot, running water and no leaks are kind of a basic thing to expect from a house.
Oh that is so not fair.
Call a plumber and give landlord the bill?
Probably not so nice, huh?
Welllll you did pick a house in a ditch, my dear. That sucks!!! Time to use big forceful words with the landlord. Good luck.
EWww! And they were worried about your little piggys in the garage??? I think their karma is coming to get them.
Yuck!! That's awful. But good to know. (Mental note to self when househunting soon - run hot water in houses just to check)
Hope things get fixed soon.
Contracting and paying a plumber yourself, then deducting it from the rent may be an option if you have the stones to play tough with Landlord No Response.
Good luck.
Keep us posted.
That happened to us in the last house we rented: brown water. We needed a new hot water heater. Then - tonnes of nice, clean water!
So, yup, you need to call him. If you don't get an answer, you know where he lives, right?
Sending "I will not be ignored" vibes your way.
Unless it's changed, SF is tenant friendly, as cities go.
He should replace that heater. Now.
So sorry to hear you are going through so much rough stuff! I love your writing, and visit your blog often.
I know it's not much...but I'm in Japan, and shipping to the US via the base post office is the same cost as domestic US shipping...can I send you any little treats from here that you and the kids miss? Let me know, I'd be happy to fill a box or two!
Wow. That is insane. Hang in there.
I would call NOW! This minute. Politely but firmly let him know in the message (I'm assuming he won't answer) that you would prefer to hear from him in the next 24 hours. If you don't, you will hire someone to take care of the problem and will deduct the cost off next month's rent.
Give him HELL!
