Today`s Insomnia Moment Is Brought to You by....
....an old Japanese woman on the subway in Tokyo a few years ago, who smiled at then-small Big Son and Daughter, and, still smiling, said, "Your children are very beautiful, but I`ll bet your husband`s parents were angry when he married you!"

haha Funny how those things pop into your mind. I had insomnia at 4 AM this morning thinking about an incident with Autumn that happened last night. *sigh* Not looking forward to her being 15. When I finally got back to sleep, had a terrible dream about my best friend and her crazy asshole dad. :(
I can't believe she said that out loud! I mean, I can feel some older Asians think that when they look at my Asian husband and then at my white self, but not out loud.
Just catching up with your other posts. I told my family about my blog a while ago and sometimes regret it. Where am I supposed to process all the family stuff if they're reading? I like how you handled the thing with your bro though. Nice.
My own "insomnia" was actually caused by Z's nagging cough @ 2:30 AM... actually hadn't been doing too badly sandwiched 'tween my boys until then!
I've given my URL to a few close friends, but I think I would delete it all if my family found my blog...
Hope you catch up on your sleep soon.
LOLOL
Things are a little less like that here in Hawaii, but I'm sure a lot of older Japanese ladies think that too... Actually, now that I think about it, an older Korean lady actually told DH that he shouldn't marry me because it would dilute his blood or something... He found it amusing, I did too (a little) but it made me a little self conscious for a while.
I know you worry about your kids' sense of identity--I've always been meaning to tell you that you should move here. :) Everyone's so mixed up (in a good way!) that hapa kids don't get a second glance, except for people to say, "Ooh, hapa kids--how cute! Lucky!" Lots of Japanese culture, but American culture as well. (And Hawaiian, and Korean, and Filipino, and Portuguese, and...you get the idea!) They'd fit right in. :)
That's fantastic!!! I believe that she said it out loud...I'm only surprised she kept smiling. :)
Sort of reminds me what my Obachan told me about her first impression of my mother: "So your father tells us he's going to marry this girl, and then he brings home this little white thing."
Of course, she produced 4 grandchildren for them, so Obachan doesn't complain (much) anymore about us not being full Japanese, or taking it up with us older three grandkids for continuing to marry hakujin. Progress!
BWAHHAHAHAHAAAA!!!
Y'know what I thought when I read that? That she had married a non-japanese man and suffered her own parents' wrath. Maybe I'm just being a pollyana about it all, but that's how I took it -- she was remembering what she went through and figuring the same thing happened to you.
